For many people the 14 mile car journey around Lake Coniston in the
Lake District appears to be a pretty flat one, but try running round
the lake and you will find there are some steep "undulations"
particularly on the "secret" east side of the lake. 1356 runners,
from all parts of the UK, possibly attracted by the location and
perhaps the Saturday date - allowing a night in the pub followed by a
few hours the following day on the fells - embarked upon the "half
marathon and a bit". This year five Garstang Running Club members were
up for the challenge and were led home by Richard Roberts in 26th place
in 1 hour 27.27 minutes followed by Tim Warner 174th in 1.40.58, Geoff
Lund (no doubt staying in the pub rather than going on the fells the
following day) 379th in 1.50.08, Frank Miller 405th in 1.51.05 and
Julie Graham 914th in 2.09.13 with the last competitor finishing the
course in 3 hours 13 minutes.
