Dave Neilands reports . . . .

Lots of varied races were on offer recently for Garstang Running Club members. On New Years Day Phil Roberts chose the Nine Standards Fell Race at Kirkby Stephen as his hangover cure. In a field of 89 Phil finished 38th in 1 hour 10 minutes.

The Lancashire Cross Country Championships at Witton Park Blackburn attracted five club members with Tony Pritchard finishing 75th, Geoff Lyons 95th, Dave Barraclough 99th, John Pitchford 112th and Pete Gelderd 119th.

The Garstang High School 10k attracted 6 club members but sadly only 3 were able to race as the race was over subscribed (perhaps just as well for some of them). In a large field of 453 (including a fair few "new year resolutioners") Richard Roberts finished 17th in 36.33 minutes, Tim Warner 117th in 42.32 and Mike Hall 317th in 52.56 with the final competitor completing the course in 1 hour and 13 minutes.

Talking of "new year resolutioners", Denise Griffiths of the running club is, depending on demand, prepared to organize her ever popular "Get you started" or "Get you started again" classes throughout January and February. Completely free of charge and free of pressure - it really is for people who have never run before and the distances covered will be from nought to not very far, at a sensible pace.

If interested, give Denise a call on 01995 603642. The intention is to meet at the Sports and Social Club on Monday and Friday evenings at 18.00. Believe it or not several previous participants, and now regular exercisers, say it really is quite good fun!
